l am wondering how much labour pain relates to how bad of menstrual pain you get.

My menstrual pain has always been really bad to the point it would make me throw up and l would have to take medication for 3 days.l am getting very worried as l am nearly 8 months pregnant and starting to get this type of pain once a day, although not as bad.Is this what my labour is going to be like only worse? l can not imagine worse.

l did tell my doc and he said they were normal.

l guess my question is - are labour pains similar to menstrual cramps or are they something different - so l can get my mind around it.My menstrual pain has never been sharp like I've heard contractions described.

nothing like it, maybe at begining of labour yeh but fullblown labour they r 10 times worse.. not meaning to scare u just answering question ! u cannot describe the pain but menstural pains r what we all experience & can relate so thats why I think some people compare it to.
Do not stress u need to breathe through the pains & u r normal inbetween contraction ! but relax & breathe is the trick make sure u tell ur partner to remind u to breathe through labour this helped me heaps & reminded me ! Also the shower is great !! I have had 4 babies all natural so it cant be to bad :)
What got me through is think of all the women include ur grandma etc who done it with nothing & we can do it too !
good luck

I used to suffer period pain really bad too & I've given birth three times. I found the contractions were slightly similar to menstrual start with but then became different. A sharp, radiating pain that got increasingly stronger as the labour progressed. Your brain has an amazing ability to cope with it though, gotta love those endorphyns, u just have to try to relax (it will be hard) breathe in through ur nose & out through ur mouth. I imagined I was blowing at the flame of a candle but I needed to control it to a steady exhale so I would not blow that flame out, just bend it over.

I consider myself a bit of a sook when it comes to pain but after having an epidural with my first (I'd been at it for 19 hours by then) I then decided that I had no control & with the second two births I chose to go natural. I used the pain to tell me what was going on, its pain with a purpose & u need to keep that in mind.

One other thing as a bonus, since having my first baby, period pain has been pretty much non existant. I hope the same for you.

Best of luck & congrats.

by the medical point of view the labour pain r so severe as compare to menstural pains.and u hv pains like this becoz of enlargement of uterus becoz of baby caring more weight & causing bearing down sensation on the cervix.these all things r cause by hormonal changes in the body.the labour pains r occurs in the proper time intervals like wave by which baby expels from the uterus.this is the normal phenomena u have no need 2 be worried but if u feel they so severe u have 2 concern ur doctor.

The area where contractions r felt is different for every woman, so I can only speak from my own experience. I was like you, my menstrual cycles were so painful that I would vomit for days & pass out in random places. Anyway my labor was induced & it felt ABSOLUTELY nothing like menstrual cramps. It was high up in my abdomen & just felt like it was tightening up. I was in labor for 11 hours & then ended up having a C-Section, so I do not know how it feels once you're about to push, but I will tell u out of secrecy that it did not hurt the way u think. I would have to say it was only uncomfortable once the fluids built up in ur bladder, but u can call the nurse as often as u want to help empty ur bladder. And I do not know if u plan on getting an epidural, (and I highly respect ur decision), but I also highly recommend one. This is supposed to be a joyous occasion, & once u get too far along without an epi, it is not very joyous again for awhile. Anyway I also think that ur painful menstrual cramps kind of builds up ur pain tolerence in that area. It was really a lot of fun, not ANYTHING to be scared of (Because I was so scared I cried for days beforehand), & will be BY FAR the BEST day of ur life no matter which way ur baby comes out!!! Congratulations!

It was a bit similar to menstrual pain during early labour.
However much pain u have during ur period, giving birth will top it by a 1000 times believe me. The thing about contractions & labour is that u can not really describe what it feels like & only women who have had babies understand it. The beautiful thing is though that ur body & brain r made to be able to handle the pain. You will throw up (most women do during labour)and u will be in pain. Unlike during ur period u will finally meet that beautiful baby that has been growing inside for the past 9 months & that thought alone will make u able to push on through. And of course as soon as ur baby is born all pain is gone & forgotten.

Do not worry, do not be scared. Women all over the world have been during this since the dawn of day. You can do it, believe in yourself & ur power as a woman.
When in labour concentrate on one contraction at the time to have to get through.

Also, u might want to look into hiring a Doula for support (or asking a family membe or friend who already has children to help you)

Good luck, you're going to have a little baby soon..Yeeeaaah! :D

No menstruation pain has nothing to do with it.
You are having daily pain because the baby is edging it is way down the birth canal getting ready to deliver that is a good sign as your cervix is gradually opening, try not to think about it. it will be over and done with before you know it. All the best and congratulations in advance.

I suffered bad period pains & I think it prepared me for labour. I actually found it easier. When my waters broke the pains just a little got worse, but I realised when I relaxed they were not as bad. And once u get to the stage that u have to push, u look forward to ur next contraction as it means u can push & u dont feel the pain when u r pushing. It is just hard work, but not painful. And each contraction brings u closer to the actual birth & soon it will be all over.
As for the pain u r having at the moment, is there any chance it may be braxton hicks?

You are probably experiancing Braxton Hicks which are false labour pains.
I wo not lie.Labour hurts, but the baby will come regardless.
Cliche, but the pain is worth it and you will soon forget once your baby is in your arms.
There is plenty of pain relef and the midwives wo not leave you in agony.
Do not worry and the best of luck.
:O)

unfortunately they're worse then period pains. Just imagaine your strongest worst menstrual pains and times it by 50. Nobody can truly expalin what they feel. Me personally have never felt pain so bad in my entire life. They usually start off feeling like little gas pains that are not that bad and then they get worse and closer together. It is this shooting pain from your back to your front that lasts at least a minute or longer and the top of your legs and hips will hurt too.

Everyone experiances pain differently. Some women can just naturally tolerate more that others & that is normal & okay. Do not stress out about the pain..your body naturally knows what to do. Just let ur doctor know what kind of pain relief u r expecting. AND DO NOT LISTEN to the horror stories of other women is birthing experiances. We all know it hurts. Just breathe, relax, & let ur body do it is thing. I just try to remember.if it hurt that bad then this world would not be so populated because a sane woman would not put themselves through something they could not handle. I had my son five years ago & I am pregnant with my second; if it was torture the first time, I would not be doing it again!! Good Luck!!!!

Try not to think about it, it is not going to make it any different and you're only going to sit worrying about it and that will affect your baby.

Now, the pain you are currently feeling - have you had that checked? I would go get that checked out to make sure everything is going ok. A severe pain that is making you feel like throwing up is something that needs investigating this late in your pregnancy, and if there is a problem, the baby can be delivered pretty safely.
