okay so l know you can have sex when you're on your period, and that it actually relieves some of the menstrual pains, but would not it be kinda gross?

Some people like it, some do not care either way and other are grossed out by it. It depends on the person and their partner.
Me personally: I think it is gross because it does get messy and really I do not think you can enjoy yourself when your bleeding all over the place.
